Mark Twain’s debut novel, The Prince and the Pauper, is a work of historical fiction. The novel’s plot centers on a peasant and a prince, Edward VI, who switch places. The storyline takes place in 16th-century England, when a small boy named Tom Canty lives in Offal Court, London, with his impoverished family. Tom strives for a better life and receives instruction in reading and writing from a priest. He encounters Prince Edward VI one day while roaming around the Palace. Both are taken aback by their similarities and decide to swap places. Following then, the story discusses the problems that both of them encounter as a result of their exchange of locales. This work has been adapted into a number of films over the years.
