It briefly addresses the British slave trade and Sir Thomas, Fanny Price’s uncle, who owned plantations in the West Indies. It is a bildungsroman about Fanny Price’s life.

The novel follows Fanny Price, a little girl from an impoverished family who is taken to live with her wealthy aunt’s household at the age of ten. At the time of publication, the novel garnered favorable reviews from the audience. However, it did not garner critical acclaim until 1921. The narrative begins with three sisters marrying. The third sister is married to a former marine lieutenant who is unable to support his nine children. As a result, his wife, Mrs. Price, begs that one of her children be cared for by her wealthy sister, Lady Bertram. As a result, Mrs. Bertram chose to take Fanny Price, the eldest child, with her. Thus, the story of Fanny’s life continues.
